It Seems To Me Posts

The truth is often obscured by emotion and expediency, but its importance surpasses every inconvenience, and in the end nothing else matters quite so much.

These days, there are few things as difficult to pin down as the truth. We are inundated by information tainted by every possible opinion, yet presented as fair and accurate. That is the way of the modern world and as much as we might like to return to simpler days, that’s not going to happen. We must be our own seekers after and guardians of truth

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and swims like a duck, trust your instincts, it’s a duck. Ignore any politician, teacher, ‘professional’ or pundit who, for any reason, insists otherwise.

Our only defence against lies and deceit is the personal courage and wisdom to accept nothing at face value, to intelligently question everything, and to put no stock in anything that does not make sense after rational evaluation, however popular the sentiment may be. That can be very difficult but is the only way to live a thoughtful, rational life.

Objectivity is a pretense, even if it’s a well-meaning one. None of us can truly be objective because we all carry baggage, consciously or otherwise. The honest person knows this, and does not claim otherwise. Those who do? Draw your own conclusions.

Even the most rigorously objective of us harbours preferences and prejudices that affect the way we interact with the world. As a result, we must be doubly on guard against letting that reality unknowingly distort our perceptions. In my communications in these pages I will do my very best to resist the temptation to shape the facts behind any narrative to suit an agenda. I may not always succeed, humans being as fallible as we are, but you can be damn sure I will try. The truth deserves no less. Facts matter.

I will share with you what I have learned, what I will learn, and what I believe it all means. And if I discover I was wrong about something, you’ll be the first to know. Beyond that, how close my analysis is to what you will accept is up to you. Deciding what is true and what is false is ultimately up to you, too. Your very future depends on your ability to do so wisely.
